Differentiation of Cardioembolic Stroke
Seo Woo-Keun

Abstract
Ischemic stroke is a heterogeneous disease with various etiological mechanisms, and cardiogenic embolism is one of a major etiologic mechanism of ischemic stroke. Diagnosis of cardioembolic stroke is based on clinical characteristics, neuroradiological findings, and the presence of a potential cause of cardioembolism. However, definite diagnosis of cardioembolic stroke is challenging even for stroke specialists. Recently, considerable effort to improve the accuracy of diagnosing cardioembolism has been made by focusing on various aspects of the disease. Nevertheless, there are no standard diagnostic criteria for cardioembolic stroke. Individualized diagnostic investigation for stroke etiology and customized strategy for secondary prevention will be essential for better clinical outcomes in cardioembolic stroke patients.
